New Mexico is a unique state of America, because it encompasses all of the positive aspects of both the US and Mexico. Although visitors here would most often think its capital, Santa Fe, is the largest city here, but in fact, it is actually Albuquerque. This city is situated in the central part of the state, straddling the Rio Grande, and is a pure example of a true south-west city.
Albuquerque retains much of its Spanish cultural and historical heritage and although it is one of the oldest cities in the US, it still shines with the modernity of the present day. Albuquerque boasts a unique multicultural heritage and history where the Native Americans, Hispanic, and Latino, Anglo and other cultural influences are a part of everyday life. The modern city skyline is set against a backdrop of the ancient Sandia Mountains and an endless, timeless blue sky. 1. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
The highlight of the year occurs in October when the skies of Albuquerque come to life with brightly coloured hot air balloons. This fiesta brings together ballooning enthusiasts from across the country in celebration of all the wonder and beauty of hot air ballooning.
If you have never risen to the skies in a hot air balloon before, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a go. Going up in the air in one of the amazing vehicles allows you to get a bird's eye view of the Sandian Mountain and the Sandian Peak Aerial Tramway, which is the world's longest. Coming back down to earth rewards you with a feeling of exhilaration and wonder, making you want to do it time and time again.
2. American International Rattlesnake Museum
The American International Rattlesnake Museum houses the world's largest collection of different species' of live rattlesnakes. A day here will offer you and your family an exciting and educational experience that will be different from any other that you have experienced before. The museum will reveal the hundreds of ways that the rattlesnakes and other, less favoured, animals have influenced our ecosystem. As you journey through the museum you will discover artefacts and memorabilia that accompany the large collection of rattlesnakes. Although this may seem like something you could never possibly enjoy, you should at least give it a go because it will open your mind to new things and you will probably end up having a great time!
3. New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science
Delve into Albuquerque's history a little further with a visit to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, as it will open your eyes to the great extent of this city's heritage. This institute specialises in the origins and geological history of the American south-west, through vivid displays of dinosaur models, ice-age cave replicas, a naturalist centre and a walk through a volcano. A visit here will take you on a journey through time and will demonstrate just how far Albuquerque has come.
4. Old Town Albuquerque
This scenic village has been the focal point of community life in Albuquerque since 1706 and it remains one of the most popular places to visit here. This town is full if historic architecture, allowing you to be transported on a journey through time that will demonstrate Albuquerque's past and present.
Shopping here is a truly delightful experience, with over 150 shops boutiques, art galleries and studios to choose from. When you are all shopped out, you can take a break at one of the brilliant cafes and restaurants, where you can eat like the Mexicans.
5. Albuquerque Aquarium
No city is complete without some form of an aquarium and the Albuquerque Aquarium fulfils this requirement. This marine institution will take you on a journey down the Rio Grande, from Albuquerque to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. While visiting be sure to check out eel tunnel, the sea horses, luminous jellies and a 285,000 gallon ocean tank full of sharks. There are plenty of chances to interactively explore the marine life of the aquarium at the touch pool and the 'Divers at Work' ocean tank. This is a great attraction for the kids and even the adults can enjoy it.
