The highest point is Australia is also our nation's highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko. It is located in the Snowy Mountains in Kosciuszko National Park, which is situated in the state of New South Wales. Standing at a height of 2,228 metres above sea level, Kosciuszko only just beats its neighbours, but still conquers as Australia's tallest point.
Kosciuszko was named by the Polish explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of the Polish national hero, General Tadeusz Kosciuszko. However, not many people are aware of its history because it is not even pronounced in the same way that the Polish name is pronounced. Rather, it is pronounced "kozzy-OS-ko", which tends to make it sound more Australian.
Since it is not nearly as high as some of the world's tallest mountains, the peak is not particularly difficult to climb. It is a 9 kilometre walk up the path to the summit from Charlotte's Pass or an alternative 6.5 kilometre hike from Thredbo, where you will also be assisted with a chairlift. Once you reach the top you will find stunning views of the surrounding Snowy Mountains, as well as Australia's highest public toilet.
Over 100,000 people visit the mountain each summer. The walk will take you past much native flora and fauna and the view at the top is truly rewarding. During the months of winter and spring the peak and surrounding areas are covered with snow, which makes them the perfect destination for skiing, snow boarding and snow-man building.
Mount Kosciuszko comes to life each year in December with the "Coast to Kosciuszko" running race. This ultrmarathon is held annually and ascends to the top of Mount Kosciuszko after starting 246 kilometres away at the beach. This annual affair attracts many tourists and is definitely an event to add to your calendar.
Kosciusko is literally on top of the world; well at least on top of Australia. It is a beautiful peak that encompasses and abundance of history and culture and should be climbed at least once in a lifetime.
