Driving Tips That Save The Environment

There are many ways we as Australians can reduce our impact on the environment. One of the easiest ways to do this is to abide by the following driving tips that can easily save the environment:

1. Avoid Short Trips

One of the easiest ways to reduce carbon emissions is to avoid short trips and to try and roll them all into one long one. Vehicles have the lowest fuel efficiency and pollute the most at the beginning of a journey so it makes sense that you will go through less fuel if you are not continuously stopping and starting.

2. Choose the Shortest Route

Where possible, choose the shortest route to your destination and car poor whenever you can. The less cars on the road the better and if you are driving shorter distances, you will go through less fuel and therefore emit less carbon and pollution.

3. Avoid Aggressive Driving

For all those 'revheads' out there, this is the tip you should pay most attention to. Speeding, rapid acceleration and heavy breaking dramatically waste fuel, putting a heavy burden on your wallet and the environment. Driving in a steady manner will make your vehicle more fuel efficient and will save you money! The best way to control this is to use cruise control whenever possible as this will help your vehicle travel at a more steady speed.

4. Reduce the use of Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is a well-known fuel guzzler so the best thing you can do is turn it off. If you are just cruising around town, wind your window down to keep cool and save the air conditioner for straight runs. If you are on the freeway with your windows down, you will get slight wind resistance, which will slow the car down and suck up more petrol, so air conditioning is the best option here.

5. Keep Tyres Properly Inflated

Keeping your tyres inflated not only gives you a smoother run, it also prevents over fuel consumption. You should check your tyre pressure at least once a month to ensure that they are at the correct inflation.

6. Get Rid of Unnecessary Excess Weight

Empty the car of excess weight as added weight reduces the amount of kilometres you can travel per litre, which adds more pollution to the air. Taking out unnecessary objects such as golf clubs and unused baby prams will reduce the amount of weight in the car, making your vehicle more fuel efficient.
