Although the name may suggest, the city of Minneapolis is NOT so mini! In fact, it is actually the largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The city lies on both of the banks of the Mississippi River and is regarded as one of America's best places to enjoy life.
The city is abundantly rich in waterways and systems and is home to over 20 lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi Riverfront, creeks and waterfalls. This is precisely why it has gained the nickname of "The City of Lakes". Apart from its abundant sources of water, Minneapolis is also home to the best designed, best financed and best maintained park system in America.
The city is spread across a relatively large area, and its surrounding cities are just as pleasant. So, it seems the sensible option to rent a car on your holiday here. This will give you the freedom to explore the city limits and anything else out there that may grab your attention.
1. Minneapolis Institute of Arts
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts "inspires wonder through the power of art'. Their mission is to collect, preserve and make accessible, outstanding works of art from the world's diverse cultures.
Popular collections of the museum include the African, Oceanic, and Native American art, Architecture, Design, Decorative Arts, Craft and Sculpture, as well as Asian art and photography.
The museum offers free parking and convenient access from all the major freeways, making it an easy attraction to stop off at in your rental car.
2. Lake of the Isles
As previously mentioned, Minneapolis is home to an abundance of lakes, and the Lake of Isles is perhaps one of the most beautiful of these. This lake is connected to Cedar Lake and Lake Calhoun and is a great place to visit all year round. It is perfect in winter for ice skating and hockey, while in the summer months, canoeing is a popular pass time.
The lake is also home to a stunning golf course, which is perfect for a round or two of golf. The whole area has a certain picturesque beauty, which essentially makes it a great way to spend an afternoon or two.
3. The Forshay Tower
When it comes to choosing a place to stay in Minneapolis, there really is no better option than the Forshay Tower. This famous skyscraper was modelled after the Washington Monument and reflects the same architectural styles. The building stands 447 feet tall and features 32 floors of pure luxury. This is the perfect example of art deco, as it features designs such as Indiana Limestone, African mahogany, Haven marble, terrazzo, and gold-plated door knobs. It is no wonder it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
4. Minnehaha Park and Falls
This local park is a popular site for recreational activities and cultural festivities and is home to many locally historic features. In the park you will find the home of John H. Stephens, which is the first wood-frame dwelling to be built west of the Mississippi, as well as a small train station.
However, the undoubtable highlight of park would have to be the Minnehaha Falls. These falls are simply stunning and will mesmerise you for hours.
5. Underwater Adventures Aquarium
Every city must have at least one attraction that is suitable for the whole family and is guaranteed to be a fun filled day out, and for Minneapolis, this would have to be the Underwater Adventures Aquarium. This amazing attraction is located under the Mall of America and is the world's largest underground aquarium. It gives visitors the opportunity to come nose to nose with 4,500 sharks and other sea creatures, with the chance to swim, sleep and scuba dive with the sharks. Essentially, the Aquarium brings Minnesota's ocean to you!
