Little Rock - Big On Adventure

Located right in the heart of the U.S. state of Arkansas, you will find the capital city of Little Rock. Although the name may suggest it, this city is not so little and is actually the most populous city of the state. The name "Little Rock" was derived from the small rock formation that can be found on the southern shores of the Arkansas River, which is referred to as "la Petite Roche". Therefore it is safe to say that there is a strong focus on nature and natural attractions here.

The city is bordered by some of the state's most attractive natural highlights. The western part of the city is nestled at the foothills of the Quachia Mountains, and at the city limits you will find the cone-shaped peak of Mount Pinnacle and the lapping waters of Lake Maumelle. Fourche Creek and Rock Creek run through the city and flow into the river, creating a pleasant atmosphere within the city itself.

With so many surrounding attractions and highlights, you really will need to hire a car for your exploration of this area. Your rental car will allow you to visit the city's best areas and discover just what makes Little Rock so special.

1. The Historic Sites

As a city rich in history and heritage, there is practically something around every corner that will inform and educate you on the days gone by of Little Rock. A must-see of Central Arkansas is the Arkansas Korean War Veterans Memorial. This is a memorial to the Arkansans who were killed in the Korean War and is one of the most impressive Korean War Memorial's in the United States.

The Arkansas State Capitol is another popular tourist destination, as it is a vital part of the state's government, as well as being a stunning sight to look at. The building is rich in history and the neo-Classical style depicts a special craftsmanship and architectural distinction. The exhibits depict Arkansas' history, art and popular culture so it's no wonder that this building has been put on the National Register of Historic Places!

For a further slice of Little Rock History, pay a visit to Daisy Bates' Home. This is the home of one of the "Little Rock Nine" and an influential Civil Rights Activist. This is the perfect way to relive the history of the town's past!

2. The Museums

With so much history to display, it makes sense that Little Rock is home to a large handful of museums. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is home to the "USS Razorback" which is the longest serving submarine in the world. The museum features a research library, a theatre and a large museum area, that commemorates America's rich naval and maritime heritage.

The Historic Arkansas Museum celebrates Arkansas' cultural and material heritage with 6 galleries of local art and artefacts, an interactive children's gallery, an Orientation theatre and a museum store. This is definitely one to bring the kids to!

3. The Recreation

When it comes to outdoor adventure, Little Rock knows what it is talking about. This is the perfect way to put your rental car to use as some of the recreational areas are outside of the city limits, which means that you can embark on a scenic drive that you won't soon forget. The Arkansas River Trail is a popular attraction, and reaches from downtown Little Rock to the foot of Pinnacle Mountain. This 14-mile loop is perfect for hiking and cycling and is the perfect way to get back in touch with nature.

Speaking of Pinnacle Mountain, why not take the journey to the top of the peak where you will be rewarded with scenery that you simply cannot beat. This is one of Arkansas' prettiest spots and is perfect for a family picnic and adventure-filled day out.

Back in the actual city of Little Rock, you can continue your adventure of the outdoors at the Little Rock Zoo. The zoo is home to over 725 of the world's most exotic animals, making this the ultimate wildlife experience. Take in the majestic animals as they frolic in the pleasant environment. Make sure you go see the giraffes, elephants, rhinos, lions, tigers and jaguars, as these kings of the jungle simply cannot be missed!

Little Rock or "The Rock Town" as it is referred to as by the locals, is the cultural, historical and adventure highlight of Arkansas. There really is no better way to experience this state then to spend a week or two here!
