The U.S. state of Alaska is one of the nation's most beautiful, and its capital, Juneau, certainly does it justice. Juneau is located on the Gastineau Channel in the Panhandle of Alaska, creating an idyllic setting for this unique and charming town. 1. Alaska State Museum

Since its establishment in 1900, the Alaska State Museum has thrived and grown into one of the state's premier cultural institutions. The museum's original purpose was to "collect, preserve, and exhibit objects from the territory". While this is still its purpose, the museum has developed into so much more and is now the forefront for discovering the past, present and future of Juneau.

The museum is home to a permanent collection of artefacts, natural history specimens and art objects that pertain the human and natural history of Alaska. The permanent exhibitions of the museum include the Native People's display, which is home to the Aleut Gallery, an Athabascan display, an Eskimo Gallery and a display on the North-west Coast Indians, as well as the Natural History collection, Russian American and a Children's Room. There is everything here that your heart could desire when it comes to the history of Alaska so any history buff is sure to be in their element.

2. Wickersham State Historic Site

The House of Wickersham is the home of Alaska's Pioneer Judge, James Wickersham. The house was built in 1898 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a local treasure. This house is a perfect preservation of the past that will allow you to discover the days gone by in Juneau. Take a step back in time and bask in the history of the life of the man responsible for the Alaska Railway, the University of Alaska and the Mount McKinley National Park. This is a beautiful slice of history that you simple cannot miss.

3. Juneau Trails

Juneau is home to some of the most beautiful trails in the state and there is no better way to find these then to take a drive in your rental car out to the Tongass National Forest. Here you will find such trails as the Amalga (Eagle Glacier) Trail, Bessie Creek Trail, East Glacier Loop Trail and the Montana Creek Trail. The names of these paths are a good indication of what you will find on these trails. They are sure not to disappoint if you are in the mood for native wildlife, stunning views and beautiful forest and glaciers.

4. Mount Roberts Tramway

Discover Juneau in a whole different light as you soar through the clouds on the Mount Roberts Tramway. This scenic adventure ride will take you over the township, allowing you to discover the surrounding mountains and waterways that make this area so stunning. 5. Alaska Whale Watching
