1. Houston Space Centre
This is the official visitors centre for NASA, and a must see for anyone in Houston, whether you're just passing through or if you're there for a while. This is a place where you can really experience space - the simulations allow you to feel what its like to walk in space or land on the moon! The exhibits cannot be matched anywhere in the world, and there are activities and presentations to help you understand NASA and the missions it makes. Watch astronauts train, hold a rock from the moon and get the NASA behind the scenes tour!
2. Houston Holocaust Museum
This is a living testament to the millions of people who died in the Holocaust of World War 2. Although an outing here can by no means be classed as fun, it is important in other ways. Ways that make us remember, admire and respect the victims of a cruel and despotic leader. Entrance is free, and some quotes from past visitors include "A wonderful museum", "History you need to know", and "a fabulous and insightful journey".
3. The Golf Courses of Houston
Heres a newsflash - Houston has 250 days a year of sunshine. And heres another interesting little piece of information: head in any direction from downtown Houston, and before long you will drive head on into one of the pristine golf courses that lie very close to the city. Its the perfect combination for golf enthusiasts! Most of the courses are daily-fee, and spectators will enjoy the rolling woodlands and lush green scenery.
4. Go for a Road Trip!
Texas is the ultimate American road trip state. Wide highways, desolate views, hot sun... its straight out of a movie! Why not jump into your hire car and head off for a bit of a driving holiday. San Antonio is only 189 miles away, and is probably the next most visited city in the state. When you get there be sure to visit the Alamo, the site of one of the most infamous battles in North American history. The Riverwalk is also a popular attraction, as is Seaworld.
5. Visit the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
This is the site of a freshwater slough winding through salt marshes and bluestern prairie. In winter more than 100,000 geese and ducks fill the area to capacity, and in summer a large range of birds nest here. Alligators are year round residents too! Its the ideal place for nature lovers, fans of the outdoors or anyone just seeking to appreciate nature. You wont regret a visit here!
