Visiting Virginia

Mention Virginia to any American and they're certain to embark on a description of thick and lush forests, abundant with wildlife and untouched hideaways and retreats. The gleam in their eyes can only be matched by the brightness of the summer sun in this American state that is renowed for its outdoors lifestyle. One can safely say that there is no better place in the world for a driving holiday... no where will you get the diversity of scenery and the visual fulfillment as you do in Virginia. From stunning Alpine views in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the numerous beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia has it all. Sixty five per cent (15.8 million acres) of the state is forested, with grandiose and elegant trees such as the oak, hickory, chestnut, and maple being common. The best advice anyone can give is to hire a rental car and get exploring - it'll be a long time before you get bored of Virginia! Here's five ideas of things to see and do there:

1. Hike the Appalachian Trail The Appalachian Trail runs for over 2,000 miles through the US, but its said that the most beautiful parts of it are in Virginia. The more fit and daring attempt to hike the trail in it's entirety, but most people just choose one of its sections to challenge themselves with. There are varying walks and hikes all through the trail that will suit all levels of participant! Get in touch with one of the clubs that maintains its various sections, and get hiking! the wildlife (bears, anybody?) and the views will just blow you away...

2. Explore the Beaches of Chesapeake Bay Chesapeake Bay is the largest estaury in the US, and much of its shoreline falls in Virginia. With more than 150 rivers draining into the bay, it is a fisherman's and an outdoor enthusiasts paradise! In the Hampton Roads Region there is 2 miles of beach along the James River that is maintained exclusively for fishing, and there are also other park amenities there like a swimming pool and cabins. In the northern parts of the bay Westmoreland State Park beach and Colonial Beach are popular spots (especially considering at Colonial Beach you can visit the birthplace of George Washington!)

3. Visit Virginia Beach Virginia Beach is the place to soak up some serious sunshine and catch some awesome waves. With 28 miles of public beach, you can't go wrong! This city is a premier resort area, with any number of recreational activites, as well as historical and cultural attractions. There are beautiful hotels and lodges to stay in, and all the amenities you'd expect from a popular tourist town. And if you want to get in your hire car and explore, theres plenty of nearby places to visit. We'd recommend the Back Bay Natural Refuge, the North River Landing Natural Area, and the Cape Henry Lighthouses.

4. Check out Charlottesville Some rate Charlottesville as the greatest place to live in America. I don't know about that, but I can tell you that its a terrific spot for a holiday. Essentially a university town built around the University of Virginia, its steeped in culture and history. Centrally located on the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, its also surrounded by some spectacular scenery. A popular spot to visit is Monticello, the residence of Virginia's favourite son, Thomas Jefferson.

5. Take a drive through the Wine Country The Virginia climate and its fertile soils have made it a perfect region for producing wine. This bodes very well for wine lovers or for people who just love a bit of outdoor serenity. Hop into your rental car and visit such lush regions as the Shenandoah Vallaey, the Heart of Appalachia and Hampton Roads. In fact, wherever you may be in Virginia youre guaranteed to be within driving distance of a great winery!
