Bribie Island is a sand island located at the northern end of Moreton Bay and is a part of the Caboolture Shire. Bribie is the only island in Queensland that is linked to the mainland by a bridge, which makes it easily accessible by car and campervan and ideal for your next driving holiday!
Situated off the coast 65 kilometres north of Brisbane, Bribie Island can be accessed via the Bruce Highway, with clear roadside signs indicating where to turn off. Venturing onto the bridge that connects the island to the mainland, your eyes will be blessed with an abundance of spectacular surrounding sights. From the white, spotless beaches, to the Pumicestone Passage and the outlines of the distant Glasshouse Mountains, the contrasts are amazing and offer something for everyone to enjoy!
The first feature of the island that you will come across is the Pumicestone Passage, the body of water that separates the island from the mainland. Named by Captain James Cook, this waterway has become a popular spot for fishing, with fishermen coming from across Australia for the chance to fish in these plentiful waters. Explore the passage in a hired boat, or canoe and kayak the peaceful waters while taking in the breathtaking surrounds.
Bribie Island prides itself on being an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is for this reason that there are rare aspects of city life here! The island is home to several suburbs with the remainder of the island playing host to the Bribie Island National Park and prominent forestry plantations.
Bribie Island National Park forms a band around the coast of the island, stretching from White Patch to The Spit. There are several great 4WD tracks on which you can explore the native flora and fauna that abounds.
The Bribie Recreational Area possesses magnificent coastal scenery and native bush camping areas, offering rare bird watching opportunities and glowing in an abundance of blooming wildflowers. The wonder and beauty of this natural playground is truly something to remember and cherish for a lifetime!
The western side of the island is adjacent to the Pumicestone Passage and is home to the seaside community of Bellara. This is where the main shopping activity on the island resides. Home to the island's only shopping centre, Bellara is a hub of activity and is seen as the commercial centre of the island. Woorim is another or the island's major towns and is located on the 'surf side' of the island. This area is known for its long sand beaches, mountainous dunes and moderate surf. This is the essential place to visit if you are a surfing fanatic as you are virtually guaranteed to catch a decent wave!
On the 'calm side' of the island (south) you will find Bongaree. This suburb is known for its safe, family beaches and calm waters, which makes it the ideal location to take the kids for a day at the beach. Banksia Beach is another of the island's suburbs that boast great family beaches. Spend some quality time with the family in a game of Aussie beach cricket, doing a spot of fishing or creating sand castle masterpieces.
Bribie Island is also rich in art and culture, with a range of local attractions sure to please those art lovers out there! The Bribie Island Community Arts centre features changing displays of local paintings, craft and pottery along with offering art classes to the public. The Aboriginal Art Gallery depicts the essence of the Indigenous history of the island and offers great displays which allow the public to soak up the heritage and culture of the island.
While staying on Bribie Island, the best way to experience the nature and ambience of this spectacular area is to stay in one of the local caravan parks. The Bribie Island Caravan Park is easily accessible by following the signs to Woorim, once you get off the bridge that links the island to the mainland. On Jacana Avenue you will find the park, which is in close proximity to the local shops and the patrolled surf beach. The park is a great place for the whole family offering mini golf, tennis courts and a sparkling swimming pool. Staying at the Bribie Island Caravan Park will make your stay on this island a pleasant, rememberable experience!
Bribie Island is the perfect holiday destination that suits all ages, needs and desires. The spectacular surrounds, quiet and relacing atmosphere and endless beautiful beaches make it ideal for a weekend escape of a much needed extended holiday!
