When searching for a place to take your next driving holiday, look no further then the Upper Hunter area! Located approximately 300 kilometres from Sydney, this region is one of the most visually attractive areas in New South Wales. Home to four shires, Upper Hunter is rich in agricultural farming and has a strong equine industry. If you are beginning your journey in Sydney or Newcastle, the easiest way to access the Upper Hunter Region is via the New England Highway. Following this route will take you through the wonders of this province, allowing you to stop in the quaint, country communities along the way.

Aberdeen

Following the New England Highway, the first town you will come across is Aberdeen. This small town is most commonly known as "The Birthplace of the Blue Heeler". The attractive township is rich in local history and these sights can easily be taken in while doing the "town walk". The streets are lined with classic buildings and old-fashioned craft shops which are sure to delight keen art lovers.

The Hunter River flows through the centre of Aberdeen, which acts as a picturesque backdrop as well as the base for an abundance of water sports. Aberdeen is also the point of the southern access route to Lake Glenbawn. This pictorial lake is the perfect spot for a picnic and an afternoon of relaxation.

Scone

To get to Scone you may choose to follow the New England Highway or opt for a more scenic route. In the case of the latter, follow the highway until you come to the Segenhue Road turnoff, where veering right will eventually take you onto Gundy Road. This will take you though to Scone, while you enjoy the pretty countryside and frequent horse studs from the style and comfort of your car.

Scone is known as the "Horse Capital of the World" and is the centre of the Upper Valley region. Nestled amongst spectacular mountains, valleys, creeks and farmlands, the never-ending sights are guaranteed to please! While in town, be sure to visit the Historical Society Museum which will give you a taste of the local history and culture. Scone is also an excellent place to base yourself for bushwalking and sightseeing adventures. With so much to explore, it is a rarity that you will ever get bored here.

Merriwa

Travelling west from Scone on the Golden Highway will take you to Merriwa, a "breath of fresh air!" Home to the Festival of the Fleeces each year in June, this region is rich in agricultural heritage and is known for producing wheat, barley, canola and stone fruits.

Merriwa's close proximity to the Goulbourn River National Park makes it the ideal location to base yourself for exploration of this park. To access the park simply drive west along Ringwood Road for around 9 kilometres until you reach the National Park entrance. Experience the native wildlife by venturing onto one of the many nature trails that wind through this bushland area. This unique adventure allows you to get back in touch with nature and explore the hidden jewels of our great country!

Murrurundi

Doubling back to Scone and continuing along the New England Highway will bring you to the "crown of the Hunter', Murrurundi. Situated an hour and a half drive from Scone, this town marks the end of your Upper Hunter driving adventure.

Murrurundi is located on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range, allowing the views in this settlement to take your breath away. Enjoy a picnic in Paradise Park and explore the Eye of the Needle rock formation. Following this route will bring you to a lookout where you can experience stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The sight from this lookout truly captures the peaceful ambience Upper Valley and invites you to reflect on the magnificent journey you have just completed!
