Bush walks and walking trails can be found right throughout this region and, mountain hikes give visitors ample opportunity to experience the beautiful countryside here. With so many potential destinations, its hard to decide on where to begin, but if you are after a town that celebrates a diverse range of country, you really can't go wrong with Nagambie, a small settlement sitting on the shores of a pretty little lake.

Nagambie is a great place to escape to from Melbourne for the weekend, because it will take you less than 2 hours to drive. It's close enough for a day trip if you leave early, but it is also perfect for a weekend away. After heading north on the Hume Highway, take a turn off at Seymour onto the Goulburn Valley Highway. You will be greeted by a small town with a population of about 1900 people, which has a friendly, relaxed and laid back vibe to it. There are plenty of great places to stay, so all you have to do is choose the one that tickles your fancy the most and enjoy yourself.

The principle attraction of the town is no doubt Lake Nagambie. The recreation of the town is solely centred around this masterpiece of nature. Built on the Goulburn River, the Goulburn Weir has created an expanse of water that is well over 100 years old, and for this reason alone is worth a visit. Nagambie's main street runs down the eastern shore of the lake, which is lined with a grassy bank where there are a number of picnic areas and shady recreational facilities that can be enjoyed by both couples and families.

Waterskiing, row boating and fishing are all popular with both the tourists and the locals, and there are several paces from which you can hire the suitable equipment. The strong winds mean sailing and wind surfing will be a hit, while rowing regattas offer another exciting day out. The prestigious 'Heads of the River', which attracts enthusiasts from across the country is a must if you are in town at this time of the year. Another great way to get out on the water is to hire a tinny and head out with a group. Explore your adventurous side and take some time to explore the Goulburn River too. This is one of the largest river systems in Victoria and is very scenic with some good fishing. Be sure to bring your camera along.

If you want to get out of the town centre for a bit, head out to the Strathbogie Ranges. These rugged hills offer breathtaking vistas and thick forests. These ranges are home to an abundance of natural attractions, from crashing waterfalls to magical lookouts that are simply awe inspiring. Hop into your car and go for a drive and you wont be disappointed. There is a great range of walking trails that span the hills so strap on those hiking boots and prepare to be blown away. Horseback riding is another popular option, or alternatively you can hire a bicycle to see the countryside from that perspective. There are numerous cycling trails near Nagambie so can take in the ironstone country at your own pace and discover for yourself why this region is so enchanting.

Another great way to spend the afternoon is to take a tour of the idyllic local wineries. Fertile soils and an ideal climate means the grapes grow thick on the vine, and the skill of the winemakers here has really put this area on the map when it comes to wine producing. Tahbilk Winery and Vineyard is a favourite among tourists, and a classy cellar door and sumptuous cafe make it even more alluring. Their large property is open to exploration by walkers, so its a pleasant place to go for some wine, a meal and a stroll.

Nagambie is a great place to escape to all year round. The warm summer months are ideal for boating, fishing and all other outdoor pursuits, and in the winter its a great place to get cosy next to a warm hearth, or to take a drive and enjoy the winter colours of the countryside. The first Saturday of every month is a great weekend to visit, as this is when the Nagambie Community Market is on. Somewhat of a mini festival, this is a time when salesmen, entertainers and farmers come out to play and show off their stuff. However, anytime you visit here you will be blessed with beauty and excitement and may never want to leave.
